Moistville
Moistville is a university town; where other buildings in the town are arranged over the structure of the academic buildings.
Most of the details are given in Hypnosis Doesn't Work Like That! (chapter 36, 62, and again towards the end). It also appears in Potty Genius and Mind's Eye (although the town isn't named in Mind's Eye, it is clearly the same university). More recently, Moistville is the setting for much of The Dare that Changed my Life and Under One Roof.
Parts of the college map are colour coded, and the signposts (many of them built into fountains or sculptures) are mostly colour coded. The colours are often used as neighbourhood names.
Locations
All buildings are named after famous generals (real and fictional). Parks are named after Kamen Riders.
- Two courtyards are Sylveon Square (where the Hammond Building is) and Glaceon Square
- Custer Building has a lot of residences
- Zahl Building has most of the theatres and some editing suites for characters doing media studies. In the buttercup yellow zone on the map.
- The Maverick Centre is on Arceus Road.
- The Peckem Building is a 'blush pink' on the map, and the lobby is done out in the same colours. It's the main residence block for students with special needs who don't want to be right next to their classes, and many rooms can be adapted for different needs. It includes one suite set up as an adult baby nursery, where several named characters stay:
- Initially the nursery is occupied by Adelaide Spenser, while the anteroom is occupied by Alex Chastaine and Britney Wakefield takes the third room in the suite.
- Chastaine graduates after Adi's first year; no new student takes his room, but Toni Walker effectively moves in.
- While Adi is doing her postgraduate prep year, she returns to the nursery but we don't know who occupies Britney's old room. (Britney has then moved in with good friend Theodore Abbott over the summer, and continues to live with her in the new year)
- The following year, the nursery and anteroom are taken by Tess Naylor and Spike Luger; while the third room is assigned to stranger Maya Rorschach.
- At the end of Maya's second year, she switches rooms with Adrica.
- Gaim Park is one of several parks around the city centre. It's made up of small groups of trees, with gravel paths winding across the grass between them. A place where a lot of people can meet without seeming like a crowd. Has an amenities block with toilets and coin-operated showers (for joggers); and a kiosk selling tofu burgers.
- Hux Tower A building near Gaim Park which houses a number of college administrative offices. Where Adi went for her interview.
- The Antilles Building contains a load of classrooms
- Moistville University station is decorated with huge murals on either side and a video screen arching overhead, where art students can display their work. Several lines meet here, including the Eastern Central District Line
Other businesses on campus include:
- Fleshmongers, a fast food place focusing mainly on meat dishes. It's in one of the courtyards (note: actually on the roof of another building), made to look like a primitive shack with roof boards suspended between stands of bamboo in fixed pots.
- O'Finnigan's, a mock-Irish pub on the edge of town. The decor is polished wood and lots of green. The bar is a little island in the middle, with open areas on all sides of it. There's a stage at one side where they have local bands performing sometimes; there's a good sound system.
- Bentdick's is one of many coffee shops, decorated with dark wood and (fake) exposed brickwork. It is opposite Hux Tower on the lower level, and the pedestrian entrance on the third floor is about a hundred yards along a main walkway from the station. Its tables and chairs look like they were picked up from a hundred garage sales, giving a carefully cultivated sense of disorder. More details in Under One Roof chapter 19. The name is pronounced /bɛnˈdʑiks/, although many students who don't know the owner get it wrong.
Nearby places:
- Langerton is about an hour away for Justina on her bike in The Dare that Changed my Life
- A group of students (with littles) go for a picnic in the nearby Bowspeth Woods
